A Practical Guide to Shakespeare for the Primary School

A Practical Guide to Shakespeare for the Primary School
By:John Doona
Published on 2013-03-01 by Routledge

Shakespeare is one of our key historical figures but so often he remains locked behind glass and hard to reach. The purpose of this book is to unlock Shakespeare, to remove the tag of ‘high art’ that has surrounded his work and return him to the heart of popular culture where his plays began in the first place. In his foreword, playwright Edward Bond says of A Practical Guide to Shakespeare for the Primary School, ‘It is written with knowledge and experience of its subject – but also with the knowledge of the young people with whom that experience was shared‘. John Doona will inspire and motivate pupils and teachers alike to engage with Shakespeare in a fresh and accessible manner and provide clear, tried and tested schemes of work which demonstrate how engagement with the plays and their language can have a dramatic impact on children’s literacy and writing. As well as providing practical guidance to classroom delivery and performance, techniques, approaches and attitudes, this handbook also promotes learning outcomes linked to literacy targets and cross-curricular units of learning. The central chapters of the book form a comprehensive cross-curricular unit of work on four specific plays – The Tempest, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet – providing background notes and historical facts linked to the plays, along with comprehensive schemes of work for immediate implementation and ideas for generating performance. Features unique to this resource include:- Free electronic ‘info-blasts’ to all book buyers containing electronic versions of key elements of the book as well as additional resources and lesson plans Drama for the Petrified - A crash course for teachers in the techniques, approaches and attitudes required to bring Shakespeare to life A chapter on Shakespeare and his life, including ‘Five minute Will’ a short comic scripted account of his life Comprehensive schemes of work, each including a Teachers’ Crib Sheet, Story Whoosh!, Story Jigsaw, Scheme Structure Map, edited scenes and additional classroom resources A Practical Guide to Shakespeare for the Primary School is an essential resource for all primary teachers, trainee teachers and drama practitioners, offering guidance, insight and compelling schemes of work for the study of Shakespeare through drama in the primary classroom.

Teaching Children's Literature

Teaching Children's Literature
By:Christine H. Leland,Mitzi Lewison,Jerome C. Harste
Published on 2017-11-03 by Routledge

Inviting multiple ways of critically engaging with literature, this text offers a fresh perspective on how to integrate children’s literature into and across the curriculum in effective, purposeful ways. Structured around three |mantras| that build on each other—Enjoy; Dig deeply; Take action—the book is rich with real examples of teachers implementing critical pedagogy. The materials and practical strategies focus on issues that impact children’s lives, building from students’ personal experiences and cultural knowledge to using language to question the everyday world, analyze popular culture and media, understand how power relationships are socially constructed, and consider actions that can be taken to promote social justice. Written for teachers and teacher educators, each chapter opens with three elements that are closely linked: classroom vignettes showcasing the use of literature and inviting conversation; three key principles elaborating the main theme of the chapter and connecting theory with practice; and related research on the topics and their importance for curriculum. Other chapter features include key issues in implementation, suggestions for working with linguistically and culturally diverse students, alternative approaches to assessment, and suggestions for further reading. A companion website to enrich and extend the text includes an annotated bibliography of literature selections, suggested text sets, resources by chapter, and ideas for professional development. Changes in the Second Edition: Voices from the Field vignettes include examples from inspiring educators who use trade books to promote critical thinking and diversity Updated chapters include information on new technology and electronic resources New references in the principles sections and new resources for further study New children’s books added throughout the chapters as well as to the companion website

Energy Efficiency and the Demand for Energy Services

Energy Efficiency and the Demand for Energy Services
By:Leslie Daryl Danny Harvey
Published on 2010 by Earthscan

`From understanding the Carnot Cycle in power plants and electrochemical processes in fuel cells to examining waste heat recovery within industry, this is the |go to| book for those wanting to explore the many surprising opportunities for improving energy efficiency'. John A. `Skip' Laitner, Director of Economic and Social Analysis, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, USA `Scientific understanding and technological options can provide a successful approach to energy for sustainable development. What are needed are political will, financial commitment and social readiness. This book is essential in today's debate.' Thomas B. Johansson, Professor, Lund University, Sweden `Energy Efficiency and the Demand for Energy Services is remarkable for the scope of its coverage - the whole problem, not just a slice - and its depth, clarity and approachability. It will serve as an excellent textbook for a wide range of energy-related university-level courses.' John Straube, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering and School of Architecture, University of Waterloo, Canada Reducing and managing humanity's demand for energy is a fundamental part of the effort to mitigate climate change. In this, the most comprehensive textbook ever written on the subject, L. D. Danny Harvey lays out the theory and practice of how things must change if we are to meet our energy needs sustainably. The book begins with a succinct summary of the scientific basis for concern over global warming, then outlines energy basics and current patterns and trends in energy use. This is followed by a discussion of current and advanced technologies for the generation of electricity from fossil fuels. The findings from these sector-by-sector assessments are then applied to generate scenarios of how global energy demand could evolve over the coming decades with full implementation of the economically feasible energy-saving potential. The book ends with a brief discussion of policies that can be used to reduce energy demand, but also addresses the limits of technologically based improvements in efficiency in moderating demand and of the need to rethink some of our underlying assumptions concerning what we really need. Along with its companion volume on carbon-free energy supply, and accompanied by extensive supplementary online material, this is an essential resource for students and practitioners in engineering, architecture, environment and energy-related fields.

Mobile Learning in Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific Region
By:Angela Murphy,Helen Farley,Laurel Evelyn Dyson,Hazel Jones
Published on 2017-07-06 by Springer

If mobile technologies are to be effectively used in education, how do we best implement sustainable mobile solutions for teaching and learning? The aim of this handbook is to support educators and policy makers who are investing in innovations in digital education to develop effective and sustainable mobile learning solutions for higher education environments. Authors from sixteen countries across the Asia-Pacific region have collaborated to share their experiences with developing and implementing mobile learning initiatives. These projects focus on a variety of aspects of mobile learning innovation, from the trial adoption of existing social media platforms on mobile devices and the development of specialised applications or mobile learning systems, to the large-scale, interuniversity implementation of technologies and pedagogies to support mobile learning. Each chapter addresses challenges and solutions at one or more levels of mobile learning innovation within the education system, encompassing the student perspective, the educator perspective, technical processes, policies and organisational strategy, and leadership. The book also offers a unique perspective on the integration of mobile learning innovations within the educational, political and cultural environments of Asia-Pacific countries.

The Sustainability Curriculum

The Sustainability Curriculum
By:John Blewitt,Cedric Cullingford
Published on 2013 by Earthscan

The links between education and sustainable development are deepening, although subject to much controversy and debate. The success of the sustainability discourse depends both on the pedagogic and research functions of higher education. Similarly, for higher education itself to remain relevant and engaged it faces pressure not only to integrate the insights and lessons drawn from the perspective of sustainable development, but also to be responsive to scrutiny of its own practices in relation to sustainability. Among professionals in higher education, sustainable development has its supporters and detractors. It is embraced by some individuals and departments while being perceived by others as a threat to the coherence of particular disciplines. Although it is not currently an academic discipline in its own right, increasing public and professional familiarity with the term, and the increasing urgency of global calls for the implementation of sustainable development mean that this is rapidly changing. This volume analyses the impact of the concepts and practices of sustainability and sustainable development on various academic disciplines, institutional practices, fields of study and methods of enquiry. The contributors, drawn from a wide-range of disciplines, perspectives, educational levels and institutional contexts, examine the purpose of the modern university and the nature of sustainable education, which includes exploring links to social movements for sustainability projects, curriculum change, culture and biodiversity, values relating to gender equality and global responsibility, and case studies on the transformation, or otherwise, of some specific disciplines.
